Aisha and her one-year-old son were referred to us by a local charity who supports asylum seekers. Aisha was new to the UK, she had no local support network and experienced some anxiety due to her past experiences.
Since Aisha had a very low income we were able to provide some children’s clothes, toys and a high chair which had been donated to us. We also referred her to her nearest foodbank.
After a short wait we introduced Aisha to a volunteer, Yvonne, who visited Aisha once a week for 2-3 hours. It took a while for Aisha and her son to feel comfortable with Yvonne but slowly they got to know each other. Yvonne showed Aisha around the local area, introducing her to the park and Children’s Centre, where they attended some sessions together. Yvonne was also able to support Aisha with simple things such as getting an Oyster card and registering with a dentist. A few months into the support Aisha was offered some talking therapy over the phone. Yvonne then looked after Aisha’s son for an hour of the visit while Aisha spoke to the therapist.
Support from us ended when Aisha was moved out of the borough however we were able to refer her on to her new local Home-Start.
